“Change Your Shirt … Change the World”
KERUSSO
- From the Greek -
“To herald divine truth
as a public crier;
to preach the gospel”
GREAT NEWS! Kerusso has some special offers that might be just the thing for your budget this holiday season. Please click on the banner below to see what’s new at Kerusso Christian-gear.
I was allowed to ask Kerusso president, Vic Kennett some questions about the company and now, I am very grateful to be able to bring you this brief interview with the founder and visionary behind Kerusso Christian Gear.
Question: - Can you tell us a little about your background?
Vic: - “I grew up with almost no knowledge of God’s Word. By 5th grade I was a self-proclaimed Atheist. I remember thinking that miracles and God could not be true - after all, science had, “proven,” that. While at school one day the Gideon’s were handing out little New Testaments and I took one while my fellow Atheists only glared. Throughout my early teens I would lay awake at night, gripped with sadness about death. I would think about my parents inevitable fate as well as my own as I lay awake in fear. You see, an Atheist has no hope beyond this life. At 15 years old I was at a yard sale with my mom. Not being much of a reader growing up, it was out of character for me to be drawn to books of any kind, let alone a book with a title like, “The Late Great Planet Earth,” but like a magnet, it drew me. I bought the book for 25 cents and began to read. The evidence set forth in that book brought me intelligently to the point of taking a step of faith. It told of many Old Testament prophesies that had their fulfillment in the person of Jesus of Nazareth, hundreds of years later. The statistical impossibility of all those prophesies being fulfilled in one person made a believer out of me.
I let the Holy Spirit lead me in prayer, confessing Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. I had accepted and believed that God, the God of the universe (who I had once denied), had sent Jesus Christ to die on a cross for the forgiveness of sins and that He was raised from the dead. After praying that prayer, I began reading that same small Bible that I had received in the 5th grade.”
Question: - So how about the origins of the company?
Vic: - “I founded Kerusso in 1987. It began in the spare bedroom of my home - once we outgrew that I rented my first shop, all 1500 sq. ft. of it. Once I outgrew that building I moved to our current location and built 6000 sq. ft. Since then we have added other buildings and land so that now we occupy approximately 68,000 sq. ft. on our 10 acre campus and employ about 115 people. In 1998 we began introducing other products such as jewelry, gifts and accessories and over the past 21 years, Kerusso has become the premier and dominant producer of Christian themed apparel ”
Question: - Is your whole family involved in the business or do they have separate career paths?
Vic: - “Early on, my mom was in production with me - she folded shirts on my dresser while I was printing tees in that spare bedroom! My wife used to do all the accounting functions, but has since moved on to full time Mom. My oldest son works in sales when he’s on break from college.”
Question: - Are you affiliated with any particular church or denomination?
Vic: - “ I have been attending the same church for about 23 years now, it’s non-denominational.
Question: - How do you get the ideas for your shirts?
Vic: - “I’ve been inspired many times while at church actually - we also have a great team that contributes to the idea pool, along with submissions from fans online. God always takes care of us in the idea department.”
Question: - How did you come up with the slogan, “Change Your Shirt, Change the World?”
Vic: - It was just another God inspired thing - we were looking for an updated slogan. Our old one was, “Wear It to Share It.” I love, “Change Your Shirt, Change the World,” - it just really says what we’re all about.”
Question: - Can you share some of the statistics that relate to the impact that a Christian T-shirt has?
Vic: - “Years ago, “Impressions Magazine,” researched the reach of T-shirts. They found that before a shirt is tossed into the pile destined for the garage sale, the shirt is read by over 3000 people. When you think of the number of people you encounter during one day, Wal-Mart, the fast food place, the gas station, your child’s sports event etc… and assuming that you wear the shirt once a month, that is probably an underestimate. In 2008 we sold our 10 MILLIONTH T-shirt - 10 million x 3000 = 30 BILLION, that’s 30 billion times that the Gospel has been read over the last 22 years!”
Question: - Being “Green,” is a hot topic today, What are you doing, or have you done, to be environmentally friendly?
Vic: - “I was pretty green way before it was cool. Being green isn’t only the good steward thing to do - it’s usually the economic thing to do. For example, we still re-use almost all the boxes that are shipped to us - and the ones that are too beat up to re-use, we recycle. I remember when I first started out, I would “dumpster dive,” at our local lumber yard for boxes to ship our orders in!”
Question: - What is one thing that you wish more people knew about you and your company?
Vic: - “That I do this because I feel that I am called to do it. Most of our team members feel the same way. We are committed to the mission, not the money.”
Question: - Can you share with us some of the ways the proceeds are used?
Vic: - “Early after I dedicated my life to the LORD I learned about the Biblical principle of tithing. I began tithing long before I could, “afford,” it. This is a primary means of contributions but we also make a lot of discretionary donations to many worthy causes. One great big initiative was, and IS, our “LIVE FOR HIM,” project. In it’s first phase we donated $300,000.00 dollars to Compassion, a children’s relief organization that is helping over 1,000,000 children worldwide.”
Question: - If you could tell the world one reason that they should buy your products, what would it be?
Vic: - “In Mark 16:15 Jesus commanded believers to, “Go into all the world and proclaim the good news…” Kerusso products help you do just that. When you wear a Kerusso T-shirt you are proclaiming the good news, and starting conversations that may ultimately lead to someone coming to Christ.”
Question: - Is there anything else you would like to share with The Fundamental Blog’s readers?
Vic: - I would like to encourage your readers to become, “T-shirt evangelists.” Pray about, and choose some shirts to wear in public, learn about the messages and verses printed on the shirt and be prepared. Pray that God would lead the right people to read your shirt and ask questions. You will see the results.”
I would like to echo that sentiment and ask that you take a few moments to look at the terrific products offered by Kerusso.
